I found a similar clematis blooming on the shore of the Albemarle Sound in Washington County on August 15.  I thought it was Clematis paniculata.  Radford seems to prefer the name Clematis dioscoreifolia.

Can you help me with the distinction? Does C. virginiana grow only in Western NC? If so, perhaps I did see paniculata / dioscoreifolia?
