I found these growing in the alley behind my house near downtown Raleigh. The neighborhood dates from 1908 and my house was built in 1917. I was surprised to find the plant naturalized in such an urban setting.

This plant has certainly naturalized in NA. After being first discovered outside Syracuse, NY in 1879 it has spread widely across the US and Canada. It has spread south into NC and across to CA. Here is a link to the Flora of NA write up - http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=242101586. The distribution map is out-of-date as many more locations have been discovered. |
