Sumacs tend to hold their seeds late into the winter and are used by birds. Eastern Bluebirds feed on them when the cold limits their access to insects. I find sumac seed droppings in bluebird boxes being used for winter roosting. However, it is said that sumac seeds are low in nutritional value for birds.
