Join Carol Ann McCormick, Asst. Curator of the University of North Carolina Herbarium, for a walk at Triangle Land Conservancys HORTON GROVE PRESERVE in northern Durham County. Horton Grove Preserve spans more than 700 acres and and is an important corridor that connects protected lands along the Flat River, Lake Michie, Falls Lake, and the Little River Reservoir.
We will be walking along a small stream, then heading uphill to wander in the mixed hardwood forested slopes. We will be looking for signs of spring hepatica, spring beauties, shadbush, wild ginger, and sassafras.
We will be walking OFF TRAIL, along streams and on moderately steep slopes, so please wear sturdy shoes. Children are very welcome on this walk, but please leave pets at home. Please bring a trash bag so that we can do a quick pick-up of recyclable litter at the end of our walk.
DIRECTIONS:
From I-85, head north on N. Roxboro Street. Turn East (right) on State Road 1004 (Old Oxford Road). Continue on Old Oxford Road, going past Snow Hill Road and Pennys Bend. When Old Oxford Rd. takes a sharp turn to the right, turn North (left) onto gravel State Road 1626 (Jock Road). Go past the large gray barn, then go slowly and park along the road shoulder at the second small creek. We will walk into the woods on the west side of Jock Road.
If you are coming from someplace else or want to navigate using a map, Jock Road is south of Lake Michie; east of Orange Factory and Treyburn; west of Butner and Knap of Reeds.
