NCNPS Annual Spring Field Trip
(7:00 P.M. Friday (with evening informal talk at Brevard Hampton Inn) through Sunday afternoon.)Event Sponsor: NC Native Plants Society
Transylvania County, NC, bills itself as the Land of Waterfalls, and rightly so, as the county has over 250 waterfalls in an area that contains three parklands: Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, and DuPont State Forest. The county also has the highest rainfall of any county east of the Rocky Mountains, and in this heavy moisture grows an incredible variety of native plants, perfect for naturalists who want to visit some of these waterfalls and explore the region.
NCNPS members are invited to do just that on the hikes scheduled for Saturday, May 1, and Sunday, May2, as part of our annual spring outing.

NCNPS will focus Saturdays hike on two of the waterfalls, Triple Falls and High Falls. Starting near the Little River, hikers will parallel the river on the Triple Falls Trail and later continue up a moderately steep slope to High Falls, returning via the Galax Trail.
The total hike is approximately four miles and is considered easy to moderate. Those finishing these two trails early may wish to hike to Hooker Falls, but past experience has shown that wildflower lovers and photographers often take somewhat longer than regular hikers.
Sundays hike will be in Pisgah National Forest, near the Wildlife Education Center. This location is a high-elevation northern hardwood forest. The group will hike for about an hour and a half and then return, as this hike is scheduled for only half a day.
As in past years, the weekend will officially begin with an informal reception and talk at 7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Brevard Hampton Inn, NCNPSs designated motel for the event. In addition to the Saturday and Sunday hikes, Saturday evenings schedule includes an optional dinner at the Hampton Inn, starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by a presentation. Lastly, there will be a plant auction to raise funds for NCNPSs B. W. Wells stewardship fund. A full schedule will be printed in the April newsletter.
