Fall Trip, October 2005
On Friday we got a tour of the NC Aquarium at Manteo from Kathy Mitchell where we saw how she uses native plants to compliment the animals and fish.

On Saturday, the weather was threatening to some, but we came to botanize-right?

Aaron McCall gave us the low down on Nags Head Woods.

We were provided a list of plants that had been reported in the Woods but had not been marked recently. To our dismay, the only candidate on the list that we found was Hedera helix.

There were some stunning Callicarpa americana.

A boardwalk ...

... provided a marshy vista.

On the way out of the Woods we got to do some serious 'tree hugging' on an old oak--no telling how old it is.

The tree is dying so we couldn't resist the chance to get a group shot.

We did determine that we may have worn out our welcome when one of the natives got real upset with us.

Leaving our "friend" behind, we moved on to Run Hill dunes which are just south of the Wright Brother's memorial and next to the local high school.

Just a short distance from the road the dune presents a formidable wall of sand to climb.

We were in search of Hudsonia tormentosa and we found it.

Then we had to photograph it, record it, ogle it and 'pray' over it?!

It was amazing how the dunes encroach into the woods.

At the same time the elevation provides some breath taking vistas

On the way back to the car we had to photograph at Heterotheca subaxillias.

And of course there's always time for a group shot.

Then after scouring the dunes for Hudsonia, there by the road, not 30' from where we parked, safe in their own enclosure were numerous plants-all wondering why we didn't see them first?

After the presentations on Saturday evening the hard core was busy keying out the day's finds.

The next morning the skies were still threatening but there was no rain so it was pack up and head to the Alligator River Natural Wildlife Refuge.
Bob Dennon gave us a quick run down on the activities and then off to the canoes.

WHAT! No blue vest for Alice??

Some took the canoe trip ...

... and some walked the long board walk.

Now, sadly, it's time to head home!
Many thanks to the folks who took these fine photographs!
